The Long Day, New Quay to Aberporth via Cwmtydu
Distance: 14 miles / 22 km one way
Time: 6 to 7 hours
Grade: Strenuous
Route type: Point to point, bus return
Map: OS Explorer 198, New Quay & Aberporth
For strong walkers, this is a full day along the Ceredigion Heritage Coast, linking New Quay and Aberporth via Cwmtydu, Llangrannog, Penbryn and Tresaith. It strings together harbour, quiet coves, high headlands and sandy beaches in one continuous line, with frequent climbs and descents and views across Cardigan Bay for most of the way.
Highlights include Penbryn, a National Trust beach reached along a wooded valley path and known for its clean sand and relative quiet, and Tresaith, where a small waterfall drops straight onto the beach from a glacial meltwater channel cut off by the sea. Both make good places to pause, eat and look out over the water before the final stretch into Aberporth.
From Aberporth, the T5 Trawscambria bus runs towards Aberystwyth via New Quay, giving a reliable way back without retracing your steps. Check current timetables before you start. This is a committing route with limited refreshment stops, so carry enough food and water for a full day and be prepared for changeable weather.
